Biography

Xiaohan Wang is a Ph.D. student in English Literature at the University of Notre Dame. She studies the nineteenth-century Anglo-American novel, especially its representation of human psychology and individual consciousness. Her M.A. thesis examines Henry James’s portrayal of the heroines’ consciousnesses and marriages in The Portrait of A Lady and The Golden Bowl. She looks forward to exploring the interactive and mutually formative relationship between human consciousness and history, culture, and politics, and to surveying the intellectual and moral grounds of the American novel, so as to understand whether and how this literary tradition constitutes a critique of its contemporary culture and society.
