Kyler Schubkegel

Ph.D.

Biography

Kyler Schubkegel is a 2nd-year Ph.D. student in English at the University of Notre Dame. With a focus on 20th-century American literature, his research emphasizes sound, rhythm, tactility, timing, and affect in lyric poetry and prose. He has a special interest in authors with theological questions or aspirations -- like Marie Ponsot, Kay Ryan, Jean Toomer, and James Baldwin -- but considers a wide range of material, from the functions of sound in Gothic fiction to the role of timing and the weather in Elizabeth Bishop’s love poetry. His work is motivated by a curiosity about lyric writing and its study in increasingly posthuman contexts, and about what the music of language means for us today.
