The English Department is pleased to announce that our 2019 Joseph M. Duffy Lecturer is Kirsten Silva Gruesz, Professor of Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Professor Gruesz's lecture, "From the Puritan Errand to the Errant Latin(x): Language, Race, and American Memory," will take place in the Eck Visitors Center Auditorium at 5:30 pm on Thursday, March 28. A reception will follow.
Kirsten Silva Gruesz is also affiliated faculty in the Latin American & Latino Studies Department and Critical Race & Ethnic Studies Program at UC Santa Cruz. She teaches the comparative literatures of the Americas, especially Latinx writing in historical perspective. She is the author of Ambassadors of Culture: The Transamerican Origins of Latino Writing. Another book, Cotton Mather's Spanish Lessons: Language, Race, and American Memory, is forthcoming from Harvard University Press.
The Duffy Lecture Series honors the great teacher-scholar Joseph M. Duffy (1924-1988), who taught at the University of Notre Dame from 1954 to 1988.
