The first meeting of the 2017-18 American Area Seminar will take place on Friday, September 22, from noon to 1:30 pm in 242 O'Shaughnessy Hall.
Dan Sinykin, postdoctoral fellow in the department of English, will give a talk titled "Great Divides: A Computational History of Economic Language in the US Novel, 1950-2000."
"How does the language of economics migrate into the US novel across the second half of the twentieth century? In this talk, I discuss the computational methods I and my collaborators used to answer this question. I also present two significant findings: 1) the use of economic language spikes in the US novel from 1973 to 2000; and 2) economic language in the US novel across this period is dominated by white authors."
