Vincent P. Pecora, the Gordon B. Hinckley Professor of British Literature and Culture at the University of Utah, will lead a discussion of three of his articles:
- Chapter One of Secularization and Cultural Criticism, entitled "Secular Criticism and Secularization"
- "Secularization Beyond Western Eyes: Ashis Nandy and the Defense of Innocence"
- "Dead Again: The Inkbottle and the Paraclete"
This seminar is part of the 2013 Annual Ward-Phillips Lecture series titled "Secularization Without End." The series opens with Pecora's lecture "Martin Heidegger, John Calvin, Samuel Beckett" Monday, April 15, at 4:30 pm in the McKenna Hall Auditorium and concludes with his lecture "J.M. Coetzee and the Puritan Within" Wednesday, April 17, at 4:30 pm in the Hesburgh Center Auditorium.
Vincent P. Pecora has taught at the University of Arkansas, UCLA, and has directed a summer seminar each for the School of Criticism and Theory and the Social Science Research Council. He is the author of Self and Form in Modern Narrative, Households of the Soul, Secularization and Cultural Criticism: Religion, Nation, and Modernity, and he is the editor of Nations and Identities: Classic Readings. His current projects are a book entitled Secularization without End: Beckett, Mann, and Coetzee; and a second book entitled Anyone Is as Their Land Is: Autochthonous Modernism. His work has been translated into Italian, French, Spanish, Korean, and Chinese.
