Honors Concentration
In the English Honors Concentration, select majors create programs tailored to their own particular interests and needs. A faculty mentor guides each of these students through this intensive experience. The English Honors Concentration is particularly beneficial to students wishing to pursue graduate studies in English.

Admission
Invitation to Apply
At the end of their sophomore year, students are invited to apply after being identified in one of two ways.
- 3.78 GPA in three or more English classes
- Faculty Nomination
Statement of Purpose
Invited students declare their interest in the Honors Concentration by completing a Statement of Purpose, a 250-300 word statement describing what the student hopes to focus on during his or her time in the Honors Concentration.
Notification
Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance to the Honors Concentration before the start of the fall semester.
Advisor
The Honors Concentration advisor approves an Honors student's pre-registration plans but does not mentor a student on his or her Honors Thesis.

Requirements
Course Requirements
- Introduction to Literary Studies and three Traditions Courses.
- Two English Elective courses in the area of interest.
- Three other English Elective courses; or two English Elective courses and an advanced course, related to the thesis, in another department.
- In the senior year, a graduate course in the area of interest.
- In the senior year (in the semester that the graduate course is not being taken), English 52999, Honors Thesis (which replaces the research seminar required of English majors).
Activity Requirement
Each semester, Honors concentration students are required to attend a relevant lecture, film, or theatrical production.
Convocation
At the end of the year, the Department of English hosts a reception to celebrate the completion of Honors Concentration projects. This reception will also be used as an information session and recruitment opportunity for other students who may be interested in joining the Honors Concentration.
