Faculty Advising

All English faculty members who are not on leave serve as undergraduate advisors. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisors whenever they have questions about the major or program of studies.

Students must see their advisors at least once a term, in the week or two before the registration period. Since the English major curriculum allows the student to choose electives, advisors help students choose the courses that best match their interests.

Students may indicate a preferred advisor when declaring the major. Otherwise, the Director of Undergraduate Studies assigns advisors according to availability.

Students may switch advisors simply by obtaining written permission from the new advisor and reporting the change to the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Role of the Director of Undergraduate Studies
The Director of Undergraduate Studies keeps scheduled office hours in the Department's offices and responds to questions about the major requirements, about off-campus study and transfer courses, and about career opportunities. The DUS handles suggestions, problems and criticisms related to the undergraduate program in English. The DUS does not serve as a substitute for the student's regular faculty advisor.
