Old and Middle English

Overview

The program in Old and Middle English offers a range of courses of unparalleled depth and breadth. It supports traditional and contemporary research and inflects literary studies with paleography, Latin, other vernacular languages, and contemporary theory.

With Notre Dame at the vanguard of interdisciplinary research, students benefit from lively ongoing research in medieval philosophy, history, theology, and languages.

Leading medieval scholars from North America and Europe are regular visitors to our campus. Some recent visitors include: Andy Orchard, Paul Strohm, Nicholas Howe, Rosamund McKitterick, and Patrizia Lendinara.

As part of its investment in Medieval literature, the Department of English offers a named fellowship each year to an incoming graduate student in the field. The "Mathaus Fellowship in Medieval Literature" provides a service-free year to provide time for additional research and/or language training. The stipend for this fellowship, at $20,000, is substantially above a regular graduate student stipend.

For postdoctoral work, the Medieval Institute offers a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship for a junior scholar in Medieval Studies. The Mellon Fellowship is made possible through the generous response of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to a challenge grant awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The fellowship permits an outstanding young scholar in any field of medieval studies to continue his or her research while in residence at Notre Dame's Medieval Institute.
