Mary Burgess Smyth's areas of interest and research include late-nineteenth and twentieth-century Irish writing, in particular writing produced in the North, the postcolonial, modern Scottish writing, and partition. She is currently completing a study of the impact of partition on the modern Irish canon. Burgess Smyth has authored articles on the Northern dimensions of the Irish literary Revival and the Irish literature entry for the new Britannica. She is currently researching a new book on the break-up of Britain and modern writing.
